Her dream was a ranch in Missouri.
People always mention this. Her dream.
As if she'd wake up in the morning and say to her man,
I had that dream again:
the cattle,
the fences,
the sky...
We don't try to imagine anymore how it would be to live free of the events. We don't think of starting over, but of adding on. A sleeping porch becomes the ideal. Screened, on the street side, but above. How it would feel to lie down on a level with the branches of the trees, in the dark, and the nearly open air.
